Symptoms of a ligament stretch

Symptoms of a ligament stretch

Ligament stretching is one of the most common sports injuries in Germany. The cause can be an accident, e.g.

  • Bending of the foot on the curb or
  • at ball duels in sport
  • in non-physiological movements in a duel (sports trauma).

However, it can also be the result of a missing or insufficient warm-up program before exercise. When athletes perform a "cold start", the muscles are not yet adequately supplied with blood; if you do not do stretching, the ligaments of the joints are suddenly fully stressed. This can quickly lead to overstretching. Most of the time, a ligament stretch is either

  • Accident or
  • unprepared sporting activities ahead.

The main symptoms of ligament stretching are pain. These occur suddenly and can usually be assigned to the corresponding movement (sport, accident, etc.) by those affected.
The pain of a ligament stretch is localized in the area of the affected joint and here the affected side and is called

  • pressing,
  • felt cutting.

They are mostly

  • locally limited and
  • radiate in very few cases.

In many cases there is swelling in the area of the joint after stretching. Due to the overuse of the belt, it also occurs

  • Stretching or
  • Strains or
  • Cracks from surrounding structures.

For this reason, hematomas can always form around the ligament. Pain, swelling and possibly hematomas are among the main symptoms of ligament stretching. Most of the time, the collateral ligaments of the ankle or knee are affected. In some cases, ligaments also stretch in the shoulder area. The pain in the area of the ligaments can be so severe that those affected immediately adopt a relieving posture and are initially unable to perform the corresponding physiological movements or only to a limited extent (e.g. limping).

A ligament tear must be distinguished from ligament stretching, the symptoms of which are similar to stretching, but the severity of the pain can sometimes be much stronger. A torn ligament also leads to instability in the area of the affected joint. In addition, there can also be massive functional impairments in the affected joint if the surrounding muscles and ligaments cannot or only partially take over the tasks of the torn ligament.

Therapy of choice for ligament stretching is

  • Cooling,
  • Protection and a corresponding
  • Pain therapy.

Furthermore, the leg should be put up and initially avoided sport and strenuous movements.
