Home remedies for Achilles tendonitis

introduction

Achilles tendonitis is often a very persistent disease, which is why many affected people feel the need to do something to help the healing process. Cooling the Achilles tendon is especially important in the early stages of the inflammation. Conventional ice packs as well as various wraps can be used for this. Essential oils are used to reduce inflammation. In later stages, small exercises such as stretching exercises can also be used.

Appointment with an expert in Achilles tendonitis?

I would be happy to advise you!

Who am I?
My name is dr. Nicolas Gumpert. I am a specialist in orthopedics and the founder of .
Various television programs and print media report regularly about my work. On HR television you can see me every 6 weeks live on "Hallo Hessen".
But now enough is indicated ;-)

Athletes (joggers, soccer players, etc.) are particularly often affected by the Achilles tendonitis disease. In many cases, the cause of the Achilles tendonitis cannot be identified at first. Therefore, the treatment requires a lot of experience. I focus on Achilles tendonitis.

The aim of every treatment is treatment without surgery with a complete recovery of performance.

Which therapy achieves the best results in the long term can only be determined after looking at all of the information (Examination, X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, etc.) be assessed.

Application of cold

Cold applications are a good way to alleviate the symptoms, especially in the acute pain phase. A simple ice pack can be used for this, quark and cabbage wraps are also used. It is important to leave the compress on the skin for a maximum of 20 to 30 minutes. After that, they are usually no longer cold enough to have a real effect. Ice packs should also never be placed directly on the skin, so it is best to wrap them in a kitchen towel or hand towel. Short, cold foot and calf baths can also alleviate the symptoms.

Quark wrap

Quark compresses are a tried and tested home remedy for all types of inflammation. To make a quark wrap you need kitchen paper and conventional quark. So that the quark wrap is cold, you should put the quark in the refrigerator and take it out of the refrigerator immediately before use. For the wrap you put some quark on a piece of kitchen paper. This can then be folded so that the quark is completely wrapped in kitchen paper. The quark wrap is placed on the inflamed Achilles tendon. You can also fix it with a kitchen towel.
The best thing to do is to make several curd rolls straight away and put the remaining rolls in the fridge for later. The kitchen paper can soak up the quark, which increases its cooling effect.

strain

Stretching is a form of exercise that should be used especially after the first acute phase of Achilles tendonitis. The inflammation and the pain associated with it protect the affected leg. In addition, the Achilles tendon is moved and stretched as little as possible, since every movement causes pain. After a few days, the Achilles tendon will be shortened. The tendon can also easily stick together due to the inflammatory processes.
If the inflammation has subsided somewhat, you should therefore start stretching exercises as early as possible. However, these only make sense if not every millimeter of movement is associated with severe pain. At the beginning, some stretching exercises should be practiced with the responsible physiotherapists and doctors. These can then be easily incorporated into everyday life, for example when climbing stairs or brushing your teeth.

Above all, regular, rather short performance of the exercises is effective. You will usually gain more if you stretch the Achilles tendons three times a day for three to five minutes while brushing your teeth than if you take half an hour every other day. For the stretching exercises, for example, it is usually sufficient to put the tip of your foot against the wall, move your heel towards the floor and thus stretch your calf. At a staircase you can stand with the balls of your feet on the step, your heels are then moved below the horizontal level of the step.

castor oil

Castor oil is applied to the skin just above the Achilles tendon and calf muscles in the treatment of Achilles tendonitis. Its ingredients have an anti-inflammatory effect on the Achilles tendon. At the same time, they promote the metabolism in the muscles and thus help the body to better combat inflammation. Ideally, the castor oil should be properly massaged into the calf. The additional massage stimulates the blood circulation and metabolism of the calf muscles and the Achilles tendon.

Wedges in the shoes

Wedges are used in shoes for Achilles tendonitis. So you walk easily on tiptoe all the time. This position makes the Achilles tendon less tense and stretched, relieving the tendon and reducing pain and inflammation. It is important to use the wedges in both shoes so that there is no leg length difference.

Capsaicin

Capsaicin is a pain reliever made from cayenne pepper. It is found in many pain relief ointments and is mainly used against muscle and back pain. Above all, it has an external warming effect and thus improves blood flow to the painful tissue. It is therefore not necessarily recommended for the Achilles tendon in an acute inflammatory phase with overheating of the tendon. In the later course, however, stimulating the blood circulation is well suited to better combat the remaining foci of inflammation.
