Torn muscle fiber in the buttocks

definition

A ruptured muscle fiber is a common sporting injury in which sudden movements that go beyond the physiological extent rupture part of the fibers that make up the muscle. By definition, a ruptured muscle fiber is associated with destruction of muscle cells and bleeding. This can also occur on the buttocks, whereby the definition of a muscle fiber tear on the buttocks includes the gluteal muscles, which consist of the muscles gluteus maximus, medius and minimus.

causes

The causes of a torn muscle fiber in the buttocks are movements that exceed the normal elasticity and stability of the muscle fibers and these are under such great tension that they tear.
Often times are considered causes especially fast and sudden movements, especially in not warmed up muscles responsible for a torn muscle fiber. Typical movements in which a muscle fiber tear in the buttocks can occur are e.g. Extreme flexion in the hip joint with an extended leg, long lunges forwards, or shooting movements in soccer. Involuntary movements in accidents such as skiing, in which the buttocks are stretched excessively, can also cause a torn muscle fiber. The occurrence of torn muscle fibers on the buttocks is favored by insufficient warm-up before exercise.

diagnosis

A torn hamstring is one in most cases clinical diagnosis.
At the beginning there is the anamnesis (discussion with the doctor). The doctor asks about acute pain, as well as a trigger such as a lunge or unusual movement. There is also a functional deficit of the gluteal muscles, i.e. the leg can only be moved to a limited extent. During the inspection (when looking at it) you may notice a bruise on your bottom. Palpation of the affected area reveals a localized pain over the torn muscle fiber, which can be accompanied by a palpable swelling. To differentiate a muscle fiber tear from a strain or if the diagnosis is unclear, in some cases a MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) may be necessary.

Appointment with a sports orthopedic specialist?

I would be happy to advise you!

Who am I?
My name is dr. Nicolas Gumpert. I am a specialist in orthopedics and the founder of .
Various television programs and print media report regularly about my work. On HR television you can see me every 6 weeks live on "Hallo Hessen".
As a passionate athlete, I have specialized in the treatment of sports diseases for professionals and hobby athletes.
The focus is therefore on diseases of the muscles, tendons and joints.

In order to be able to treat successfully in orthopedics, a thorough examination, diagnosis and a medical history are required.
In our very economic world in particular, there is too little time to thoroughly grasp the complex diseases of orthopedics and thus initiate targeted treatment.
I don't want to join the ranks of "quick knife pullers".

The aim of any treatment is treatment without surgery.

Which therapy achieves the best results in the long term can only be determined after looking at all of the information (Examination, X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, etc.) be assessed.

Symptoms

A ruptured muscle fiber in the buttocks causes some symptoms. Immediately it comes to severe painthat are described as stinging and force you to give up your current job. The tear in the tissue causes bleeding into the muscle, which can be seen as symptoms such as swelling and bruise appear. You may see a small indentation on the buttocks. In addition to these symptoms, the pain is clearly in the foreground.

Pain when torn muscle fiber in the buttocks

The main symptom of torn buttocks is pain. These are the first symptom of a ruptured hamstring and should cause any athlete to listen to their body and take a break.
After the triggering event, the affected person immediately feels stabbing pain in the buttocks area, which forces them to give up the activity they are currently performing. This is severe pain that initially arises due to tissue destruction (tissue damage) and is further sustained in the further course by the swelling in the muscle.
Since the muscle is surrounded by a shell, the pressure in the muscle increases due to the inflowing water and blood escaping from torn, smallest vessels, which leads to irritation of other nerve fibers and thus leads to pain even after the acute event. The course of the pain can also be such that after an initial, severe pain, an improvement in the symptoms occurs. This then increases again in the further course.
A torn muscle fiber causes pain when the affected muscles contract (tension) as well as when they are stretched.

Pain in a torn muscle fiber in the buttocks can be relieved at rest and under cooling, but every movement that strains the gluteal muscles is painful. Above all, this includes walking and standing. A torn muscle fiber also causes a significant one Tendernesswhich occurs when there is pressure on the buttocks such as occurs when sitting. The pain in the buttock muscle fiber tear can be localized directly above the lesion, but can also radiate into the surrounding area. This can sometimes lead to pain in the back of the thigh or in the lumbar spine area. The cause is the interconnection and the course of the nerve fibers that guide the pain - the damage is still only localized on the buttocks.
Of course, the extent of the pain depends directly on the size of the muscle fiber tear. Small damage causes less pain than a pronounced torn muscle fiber. The first minutes after the injury are decisive for the course and extent of the pain in the case of a torn muscle fiber in the buttocks. By acting consistently and quickly, the pain can be alleviated and also shortened in the long run. This includes above all that immediate cooling and the termination of the activity just performed. Medication can also provide significant relief from the pain of torn muscle fibers.

therapy

The therapy for torn muscle fibers in the buttocks is crucial for the course of the injury and remains in most cases conservative.
The first measure of treatment should be the so-called PECH rule are used, which is used for many sports injuries. PECH stands for break, ice, compression and elevate, in which Gentle care and immediate cooling are the most important part of therapy. So you should stop immediately with the activity and cool the affected area with ice.
The torn muscle fiber should be wrapped with an elastic bandage and thus compressed. Elevation is difficult in the case of a torn muscle fiber in the buttocks; the prone position should be preferred to the supine position.
Further therapy includes one effective pain therapy e.g. with ibuprofen or paracetamol. Treatment with methods that have not been well researched, such as electrical stimulation and the use of heat, is controversial, but harmful influences have not been proven either. The self-healing rate is very high, with the therapy mentioned above the healing time can be shortened and the occurrence of symptoms such as pain and swelling can be alleviated.
If the muscle is resilient again, it should be started with physical therapy lost muscle tissue can be rebuilt before the full load is resumed.

Duration and forecast

It is difficult to give a general indication of the duration of a torn muscle fiber in the buttocks, as everyone reacts differently to an injury and sets the body's own healing processes in motion. In addition, the duration of the restriction in the case of a torn muscle fiber on the buttocks depending on the severity of the injury and any accompanying injuries.
It is important to know that in the case of such an injury, the right treatment, especially in the acute phase, and the right behavior after the injury can have a positive effect on the time it takes for healing. It is not entirely clear whether the time to full load can actually be shortened in this way, in any case it relieves pain and swelling and thus the suffering.
As an approximate indication you should have a ruptured muscle fiber on the buttocks Put as little strain on the affected muscle as possible in the first week, then mostly everyday tasks, except hard work, are possible. It takes several weeks to fully exercise in sport, with competitive athletes often recovering faster than lay people. Generally one can assume after a torn muscle fiber on the buttocks Exercise your muscles fully again approx. 6 weeks after the injury to be able to. Only in some cases can problems and healing be delayed for months.
