Who is the Parodontax® mouthwash recommended for?

Parodontax® mouth rinse and other products that also contain the active ingredient chlorhexidine can be used for accompanying oral hygiene. The rinse can help relieve sore throats and bad breath by reducing the number of germs in the mouth. The healing of inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) can also be supported. With all indications, the use of a mouthwash can never replace oral hygiene with thorough and regular brushing of teeth. Parodontax® mouthwash can also be used if necessary.

How does Parodontax® work?

Parodontax® mouthwash unfolds its effect, among other things, through the active ingredient chlorhexidine, which kills germs. This is believed to happen because it destroys bacterial cell membranes. However, the exact mechanism of action is not known.
Parodontax® mouthwash also contains fluoride. The salts of the trace element fluorine are needed to maintain dental health. In addition, a mouthwash such as Parodontax also has a mechanical cleaning effect. Because the mouth is rinsed and the fluid is drawn through the teeth, food residues are loosened, which may not be able to be removed by brushing the teeth alone.

Active ingredient of Parodontax® mouthwash

The active ingredient chlorhexidine contained in Parodontax® is a so-called antiseptic. Such substances serve to kill germs on the skin and mucous membranes. In addition to use in the form of mouthwashes, there are also ointments and creams with chlorhexidine that can be applied to the skin. Since the substance can partially damage the body's own cells, Parodontax® mouth rinse must not be used in the case of inflammatory changes or larger wounds in the mouth.

In rare cases, an allergic reaction to the active ingredient can occur. Such a reaction usually manifests itself initially as a tingling or burning sensation in the mouth and possibly a swelling of the tongue. In such a case, the mouthwash should be spat out immediately and the oral cavity should be rinsed thoroughly with water. If necessary, you should also consult a doctor. Mouth rinses with the active ingredient chlorhexidine must then no longer be used.

What side effects does Parodontax® have?

Side effects of Parodontax® mouthwash occur only very rarely. An allergic reaction to one of the ingredients is possible. If you experience an unpleasant sensation such as burning or itching in the mouth and possibly a swelling of the tongue during use, the application should be stopped immediately and henceforth refrained from.
In extremely rare cases, an allergic reaction to the Parodontax® mouthwash can be so strong that it leads to shortness of breath or circulatory collapse. In such a case, an emergency doctor must be alerted immediately. Further side effects are only to be feared if the conditioner is used incorrectly. If the solution is mistakenly swallowed in large quantities, nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting can occur.

Tooth discoloration due to the use of Parodontax® mouthwash

By using Parodontax® mouthwash there is no risk of discoloration of the teeth. However, if you only use the mouth rinse and do not brush your teeth for it, you not only risk your dental health but also discoloration from plaque, which can only be removed with a brush. The discoloration of the teeth is then not the result of using Parodontax® mouthwash, but rather insufficient dental hygiene through rinsing alone.

How much does the Parodontax® mouthwash cost?

The price of Parodontax® mouthwash differs depending on the provider and is usually between three and five euros. There are 300ml per bottle. The product is often cheaper to buy on the Internet than in the local pharmacy, but you often have to pay shipping costs. It is therefore worthwhile to compare the prices before buying.

What alternatives are there to Parodontax®?

In addition to Parodontax® mouthwash, there are many other mouthwashes from other manufacturers that also contain the active ingredient chlorhexidine, such as Meridol®. There are also products with an antibacterial effect due to other active ingredients. If you don't want to use a mouthwash, you can also achieve good dental hygiene by regularly brushing your teeth thoroughly and using dental floss. An additional mouthwash is usually not absolutely necessary.
