Sedariston® is an active ingredient combination of St. John's wort and valerian in the form of capsules or drops, which does not require a prescription.

It is a herbal medicine that is primarily intended to calm down and relieve depressive or anxious symptoms.

Although it is a herbal preparation, possible interactions with other drugs should not be underestimated.

The attending physician should also always be informed about the intake of Sedariston® so that he can assess the risk of such interactions and react accordingly.

Side effects

Interactions

Sedariston® contains the calming herbal remedy valerian.

If you take other sedative drugs at the same time, such as some drugs from the group of tricyclic antidepressants and sleeping pills, this calming and sedating effect can be significantly increased.

The same applies to alcohol consumption during treatment with Sedariston®.

Even before planned anesthesia, the drug should be discontinued in good time, as this can also lead to an unpredictable increase in sedation.

The second component of Sedariston®, St. John's wort, is responsible for its further interactions.

Since St. John's wort can cause the skin to be overly sensitive to light, this effect can be significantly increased if other drugs with such a side effect are taken at the same time.

Which includes:

• some antibiotics (for example tetracyclines such as doxycycline),
• some representatives from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain (for example piroxicam and tiaprofenic acid),
• some drugs from the group of water tablets, i.e. diuretics (for example hydrochlorothiazide),
• some representatives of psychotropic drugs (for example haloperidol and numerous tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline),
• Antimalarial agents such as quinine or chloroquine,
• some medicines for high blood pressure (for example captopril and nifedipine) and hypercholesterolemia (for example clofibrate),
• some anti-diabetic drugs such as glibenclamide,
• some oral contraceptives ("Pill")
• Retinoids, which are used, for example, to treat acne

Amiodarone, used to treat cardiac arrhythmias, can also increase photosensitivity.

Simultaneous use of Sedariston® and antidepressants from the group of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (for example paroxetine) is prohibited as it can lead to the development of a life-threatening serotonin syndrome. Symptoms such as fever, sweating, confusion and a drop in blood pressure up to a coma appear.

With other antidepressants too, simultaneous use with Sedariston® should be avoided.

St. John's wort activates certain degrading enzymes in the liver (Enzyme inducer), which means that many drugs are broken down more quickly and are therefore less effective.

These drugs include such vital drugs as the immunomodulators tacrolimus and ciclospoprin A for the treatment of organ transplant patients in order to avoid rejection of the organ.

Medicines for the treatment of patients suffering from AIDS, such as indinavir, can also become less effective if St. John's wort is taken at the same time.

Sedariston® should be taken at the same time and with a little fluid every day if possible.

In patients with a sensitive stomach it should be stopped not on an empty stomach but rather during or after a meal.

Unless otherwise agreed with the doctor, adults should 4 capsules daily Take Sedariston®.

Either 1 capsule each morning, noon, afternoon and evening or 2 capsules each morning and evening.

If you have trouble sleeping, the last capsule (s) should be taken about half an hour before going to bed.

Sedariston® is usually used for several weeks. If there is no improvement, a doctor should be consulted again.

Application / indications

Sedariston® can be used as a herbal remedy in the treatment of Restlessness and nervousness, unrest-related sleep disorders as well as easy with moderate depressive moods and Anxiety disorders.

Contraindications

Sedariston® should not be taken in case of known hypersensitivity to Johannis herbs or valerian.
