Retinal detachment therapy
Retinal detachment therapy
Retinal detachment cannot be treated with medication. Instead, surgical interventions or laser treatments are necessary.
Laser treatment
The laser treatment doesn't treat the cause, so it doesn't heal. Instead, only retinal tears can be "sealed off". The laser only works when the retina is in contact with its subsurface. Holes can be enclosed by scarring. Once the retina has been detached, the laser treatment can no longer do anything.
The operation
In the surgical treatment of retinal detachment, several things must be observed: the tension of the vitreous humor on the retina must be reduced, the retinal tear must be closed and a scar must be created artificially to prevent repeated detachment.
The retina can be reattached through a variety of techniques.
- denting operation
A seal, usually made of rubber, is sewn onto the eye from the outside, which then dented the eye from the outside and thus the retina rests against it. A type of belt called a cerclage can also be tied around the eye. This mainly happens when there are multiple holes in the retina.
The indenting measures are not removed again even after the cracks have healed. The risk of re-entry would be too great. - Vitreous Removal
Are the holes at the rear pole of the EyeIn the immediate vicinity of the optic nerve and the point of sharpest vision, an indenting operation is out of the question. In such a case the vitreous humor is removed from the eye - it only has a nourishing function for the development eyebut can otherwise be removed.
The glass body is replaced by an oil or gas. Gas escapes from the eye by itself or is absorbed, oil has to be surgically removed after about 3 - 6 months.
As a common consequence of filling the eye with oil, almost all patients develop a "cataract". The lens becomes cloudy and has to be removed as this significantly reduces vision.
