effect
Testing of the clinical effects of St. John's wort began about 20 years ago. The effectiveness has now been proven by conventional medicine.
The effect of the St. John's wort medicine only becomes apparent after an intake of two to four weeks.
All in all, a treatment duration of several months is expected.
The treatment of depression with antidepressants is still difficult today because the biochemical changes in the depression cannot be precisely recorded.
Certain messenger substances (neurotransmitters) are not available in sufficient quantities in a depressed patient. This disrupts the metabolism between the nerve cells.
Such messenger substances include:
- Norepinephrine
- Serotonin
and - Dopamine
Antidepressants have an effect on the messenger substances mentioned above. In the case of St. John's wort extract, a collection of various ingredients is believed to have an effect on depression.
St. John's wort thus influences the neurotransmitters in the brain in various ways. It is still unclear which ingredient is responsible for this influence. All we know is that St. John's wort actively intervenes in the biochemical processes of depression. Due to the composition of the St. John's wort extract from different components, it has its antidepressant effect.
