The nasal mucosa consists of the respiratory mucosa (Respiratory region) and the olfactory mucosa (Regio olfactoria). Mucous membrane of the urethra
The mucous membrane of the urethra is raised in longitudinal folds. From top to bottom, it shows three different types of cells. Inflammation of the mucous membranes
In principle, inflammation can develop on any type of organ or skin and is typically characterized by the following criteria: reddening, overheating, swelling, pain and loss of function. The mechanism behind this is always the same: through damage to the tissues, there is a short-term reduced blood flow and the blood supply is then increased reflexively. This leads to swelling and redness. This, in turn, can slow the blood flow and the immune cells Leukocytes (white blood cells) can attach themselves to the scene. They are attracted by certain substances (Cytokines, Interleukins), which mark the damaged tissue as such. This is followed by a variety of repair and / or defense mechanisms in order to restore the function of the organ or tissue.
The best known and most relevant inflammation of the mucous membranes is that of the stomach skin gastritis. It can be acute or (mostly) chronic and have many different causes. The most common is type C gastritis. C stands for chemical and means the long-term use of certain drugs (e.g. aspirin), which destroy the basic mucous membrane protection of the stomach, as the cause. Further classifications are based on A and B; A stands for autoimmune processes and B for bacterial causes (Helicobacter pylori). Inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane can result, for example, from using a decongestant nasal spray for too long.
Inflammation of the lining of the uterus (Endometritis) is almost always caused by bacteria. The most common pathogens that are known to cause venereal diseases are: chlamydia and gonococci ("gonorrhea"). (Other pathogens are: anaerobes, Gardnerella vaginalis, E. coli, enterobacteria, streptococci, Haemophilus influenzae, mycoplasmas, actinomyces). Mostly it concerns ascending infections, i.e. diseases of the cervix (Cervicitis), but more rarely also diseases descending from the abdomen (such as appendicitis, peritonitis and inflammatory bowel disease). Risk factors for developing uterine lining inflammation are more frequent sexual intercourse with changing partners, low-symptom or untreated diseases of the genitals (Vaginosis or Cervicitis), as well as foreign body implantation (Intrauterine device). At the beginning of menstruation and after childbirth, the protective plug of mucus in the cervix is lost and therefore also offers an access route for infections. There is also an increased risk of developing endometritis after gynecological or surgical interventions and previous pelvic inflammations. The symptoms can vary from mild to life-threatening. The predominant and alarming symptoms are tenderness, fever and a so-called purulent, creamy discharge.
The inflammation of the urethra is similar to this (see also: Urethritis), as it is often a communicable sexually transmitted disease. The main pathogens are Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma. The symptoms are again very variable and can be burning, vaginal discharge or creamy-purulent penile discharge in the morning (so-called. Bonjour drops). As with endometritis, the germ should be diagnosed in order to initiate antibiotic therapy. Bacterial inflammation of the oral mucosa is very rare and occurs more in immunosuppressed patients, i.e. patients with a weakened immune reaction. Chronic inflammatory diseases such as Crohn's disease or venereal diseases such as syphilis can also affect the mouth, but are not among the classic types of infection or key symptoms.
An erythema describes a sharply defined reddening of the skin. It can be found more often on normal skin than on the mucous membrane. There is an infection of the mucous membrane Erythema exudativum multiforme. This is a self-limiting inflammatory reaction that occurs mainly after a virus infection. Self-limiting means that it will heal on its own. It appears mainly on the arms and legs, is target-shaped, burning and itchy. If this is particularly pronounced, the mucous membranes are also affected. Reddening of the mucous membranes in the general sense occurs in many sexually transmitted diseases that are associated with inflammation. Also an infestation by the fungus Candida albicans (see also: Candidiasis) can be described as erythematous (erythema-like).
Depending on the function of the individual mucous membrane, it is subject to a more or less pronounced proliferation. It is a so-called unstable alternating tissue. Changes in its shape are therefore mostly wanted by the body.
The term “growth” can mean different growth behaviors of cells. Hypertrophy describes the increase in the size of a tissue due to the enlargement of the individual cells. This can affect, for example, the hormonal enlargement of the uterus. Hyperplasia describes a condition in which the number of cells increases and a tissue becomes larger as a result. This affects the hormonal, cyclical build-up and breakdown of the uterine lining (see also: Menstrual period), so it is healthy and wanted (physiological). Its pathological counterpart (pathological) is called Malignancy, that is, a vicious growth. The term tumor should be differentiated from this. In medical jargon, a tumor describes both swelling due to inflammation or edema, as well as a benign or malignant tumor (benign or malignant).
Growths can occur idiopathically (randomly), i.e. without any apparent and disease-related reason. More often, however, they are based on hormonal factors or impaired cell division. In every organ, cell division is limited by intracellular “rules” and barriers (existing within the cell). These mechanisms can be disturbed by prolonged tissue damage. This explains, for example, why years of gastritis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach) is a risk factor for the development of a malignant ulcer (Carcinogenesis). Sometimes the growth of mucous membrane organs also starts from the glands that are located in the mucous membrane. Then it is the so-called Adenomas, mostly benign tumors.
Growths or swellings due to inflammation are more common and mostly fleeting. For example, with a special form of gastric mucosal inflammation (gastritis) the folds of the mucous membrane swell. This disease is therefore also called giant fold gastritis (Ménétrier's disease), it is treated in the same way as a conventional one.
A cyst is an encapsulated, fluid-filled cavity that can in principle arise in any tissue. They can be innate or arise in the course of a lifetime. Congenital cysts are caused by malformation of tissue (for example the dermoid cyst). The other form of cyst, also called acquired cyst, is caused by the blocked drainage of secretions. Since mucous membranes are connected to secretion-forming glands, cysts can develop here under certain circumstances. A distinction is made between real cysts (these have their own cell layer as a lining) and false cysts (for example after the tissue has softened due to parasite infestation or other inflammations). If a cyst has been shown to be filled with pus and clearly chambered, it is called an abscess.
The location and process of formation of a cyst always play a role in the evaluation of this. Oral cysts, for example, tend to grow progressively, which can then constrict or destroy surrounding structures. A cyst in the bone can dramatically lead to fractures, a mucosal cyst, on the other hand, is less common in principle, as it arises from soft tissue and often becomes symptomatic early on, i.e. causes discomfort. It can be painful if it is caused by inflammation. Congenital mucous membrane cysts in the internal genital tract could reduce fertility through suppressing growth. At the beginning of the disease, patients usually have few symptoms, rarely unspecific abdominal pain, a feeling of pressure and fullness and an aversion to meat. Endometrial cancer is the second most common gender-specific cancer in women in Germany. Mostly women between 60 and 70 are affected. It is now known that the most important risk factor is the long-term intake of estrogens (for example through birth control pills, etc.). It then occurs mainly on the uncornified part of the mucous membrane of the lower lip. If a melanoma is detected early, the prognosis is usually excellent thanks to early surgical operation.
Cancer of the mucous membrane of the vulva (external genitalia of women) is a very rare e-disease that affects middle-aged women. It is noticeable early on through visual changes, as well as itching, burning and pain, sometimes together with bleeding tears in the mucous membrane. In the early stages, surgery can be used to improve the chances of recovery. As a rule, however, the prognosis is poor and treatment is carried out with radiation or chemotherapy. Like vulvar cancer, the prognosis is rather poor. Atrophy is a shrinking of the tissue, either due to a decrease in the number of cells or a decrease in the size of the cells. It occurs less often in the mouth, on the genitals and in the esophagus. It is to be distinguished from the similar "bullous pemphigoid".
