introduction

Vomex® is the trade name of a drug with the active ingredient dimenhydrinate.

Dimenhydrinate is a combination of the two individual components diphenhydramine and 8-chlorotheophylline.
It is mainly used for nausea and vomiting, which is where it got its name from (to vomit, English = to vomit). It can also be used as a sedative. The actual effect is based on the diphenhydramine; 8-chlorotheophyllin serves to reduce the tiredness caused by diphenhydramine and has a similar effect to caffeine.

Dosage form

Vomex® is available in many different forms, such as tablets.

Dimenhydrinate (Vomex®) is available in various formulations and dosages:

  • dragee
  • syrup
  • Solution for spraying as an alternative for strong gagging
  • Tablets: possible to take with or without a meal. With strong nausea and Vomit possibly difficult.
  • Chewable tablets: Often with travel sickness applied.
  • Suppositories (Latin suppository): for use in the rectum. The suppository must be inserted into the anus. A particular advantage is that it is easier to use in children and, as an alternative, in the case of strong gagging and vomiting, also in adults.

dosage

Suppositories:
- Infants 8-15kg: 1 children's suppository (40mg each) per day
- Children 15-25kg: up to 2 children's suppositories (40mg each) per day
- School children> 25kg: up to 3 children's suppositories (40mg each) per day
- The stronger children's suppository forte (70mg) can be given from 15kg
- Adolescents from 14 years and adults: 1-2 suppositories (150 mg) per day
Dragees (50mg):
- Children 6-14 years: 1 coated tablet 1-3 times per day
- Adults and adolescents aged 14 and over can take 1-2 coated tablets 1-4 times a day
Retard capsules (150mg):
These capsules have the advantage that they only work with a delay and a little longer. As a result, they are not so suitable for acute nausea. From the age of 14, 1 capsule can be taken 1-2 times a day.

application

Side effects

Drug interactions

Contraindications

Vomex® should not be taken if:
- allergy/ Hypersensitivity to antihistamines

- Phaeochromocytoma
- at benign prostatic hyperplasia (benign enlargement of the prostate) with residual urine
- Seizures

Particular caution also applies to Cardiac arrhythmias, Liver dysfunction, long QT syndrome, as well as chronic asthma and at Constrictions of the gastric outlet (Pyloric stenosis).
